#23: The Return of Big Run Saturday

#23: The Return of Big Run Saturday

I am happy to share with you that I took my running to another level today and did 5 miles.  It was the most relaxing runs I have had over the past two months.  Now there’s something most don’t realize about running long distances.  Once your body can relax and the mind is able to drift away, you actually forget the fact that you are running.  This is definitely something you have to experience for yourself to understand what I am talking about.

I woke up this morning feeling like I had to run.  I knew a big run was in store.  My body has been feeling more fit by the day.  I decided that it was time and I went out and made it happen!  That my friends, is the power of thought.  One of the biggest challenges to running long distances is to condition your mind to stay focused long enough to endure.  It’s not always the physical that can wear you down.  Mental fatigue is real.  When you start watching the clock and looking ahead for the finish line is where you can get yourself into a lot of trouble.

That’s why I mention being able to enjoy the moments.  The sweating, the light pressure in my lower back, my feet getting noticeably warmer-all those things are a part of the deal.  Without them, there wouild be no 5 mile run today.  However, if I focused on any one of them in a negative light, I would have made today’s run much harder than it had to be.

Long distance running is, in my estimate, more mental than physical.  Again, this is something that you must experience for yourself to truly understand where I am coming from….so what are you waiting for?  I didn’t start running 5 miles, I started walking a short block!  What’s more important than that is the fact that I STARTED!  Isn’t it time you did?
