In this video, I walk through one of my workouts where I get in resistance as well as cardio work all in one session. Simply put, in between resistance exercises, I jumped rope 50x. I did four sets of four exercises which comes out to about 800 turns of the jump rope during my workout session.

During my workout, the idea to do a fitness bootcamp for people who want to exercise, but have issues with obesity. Many times, just like it was with me, these folks start off doing something, then fall right off for a lack of support. I believe that this is a part of something I am supposed to be doing. It’s all about giving back.

Even though I have not reached my goals, I have come a long way. I still consult with a group of extremely fit people so that I can continue to challenge myself and stay on top of things. My goal is to start this project on October 1, 2009. Now that I have put it out there, let’s see what happens when I take a leap of faith on this vision of mine.

Wow! Today’s run was part challenging, and all inspiring. I went out a little farther than I did last week, but still managed to run essentially the same route.

There are numerous mind games I have learned to play against myself to help increase my focus. You see, once your body gets to the place where it is physically able to run, the biggest obstacle you will face is your mental ability to endure longer runs. Take today for example. I ran over 5 miles. I always run with a set of headphones on, but sometimes my music gets confused with my GPS signal and it shuts off for stretches. I have learned to let my body go and allow my mind to go to other places. Often, I take the opportunity to reflect on solutions to problems I am having. I often refer to running as a time to meditate. There is a peace that comes about once your mind and body are in rhythm. You can hear your heart beating. You can hear yourself breathing. You can even hear the sound of your footsteps upon the pavement. There are other times when you forget that you are running. Those are the best. It’s as if your body is on autopilot and your mind checks out. It is during these stretches that you build the ability to run long distances. It will drive a person wild if they start running and immediately start looking for the end. There is so much to be learned during the run. Much in the same way, there is so much to be learned during the journey of life. They actually parallel one another. Now, this is not to say that running is the only way to reach this place. There are many. However, running is what I know, therefore, it is what I choose to speak on. Only a runner can understand the peacefulness that occurs to them while out on the route. Running is an addictive drug. Once you get the right dose of it, your body has trouble doing without it. Try it for yourself and find out.

Today marks my second “Big Run Saturday” that I have completed. Big Run Saturday is simply the day when I do a “big” run. This morning I ran 5 miles. This was a far stretch from having trouble walking around a city block. I am thankful for the mindset that helped me mold the ability to reach this milestone.

Last week I did 5 miles as well, but the terrain was much more flat. This week, I raised the bar a bit by taking on a few more hills. It was definitely a challenge, but I ran the hills instead of walking them. This definitely makes me realize how much of an impact the work I do during the weekdays has been. My body has definitely gotten stronger.

In addition, the weight loss has become more visible to me. That’s one of the reason’s I wanted to do a video blog about this journey. I had lost weight before, however, I didn’t keep a record of my progress, nor were there any photos or videos that I could go back to and visibly compare my progress. That won’t happen this time around!

Thank you for spending a little of your time with me. As always, remember:

I promised several videos ago that I would share a bit more information about what I actually do when I’m in the gym. First, you must understand that I was a college athlete. Lifting weight, although reluctantly, was a part of what I did. I spent five years at South Carolina State University and I my ears still hear the ring of free weights clanging around the room. There is a difference between having to lift weights because you are told to do so by those who hold your scholarship in hand and wanting to lift weights because you enjoy it.

I knew that when I started this journey, I would need to add weight lifting to my regimen. I consulted with a mentor of mine who said he had something to show me. Little did I know that he was speaking about Resistance Training Bands. The bands offer a unique, highly mobile. low impact way to build strength. The key is proper technique and rapid movements. That was the way to burn fat and increase muscle tone. Since I have no plans of ever competing again physically, there is no need other than vanity to show I can bench press 300+ pounds (yes I can still bench press 300+ lbs!) So I became curious about using the bands.

I must say that I have been extremely happy with them. I can workout in a gym, at a park, in my driveway, in the swimming pool-it doesn’t matter! This simple, yet genius “machines” have made all the difference in my return. You may have even seen T.O. (Terrell Owens) using them in the swimming pool during an episode of his reality show. I figure if T.O. looks like that and uses the resistance bands, then there must be something more to them than meets the eye.

In fact, you will find resistance training bands at any major college sports program around the country. Some for rehab purposes, and other for speed and agility training. I’m probably waaayyy ahead of the fitness curve here, but my the way my body feels now is proof enough for me and in time, the way I look will serve as proof enough for you.

I also notice others with weight issues who come to the gym to work out. I watch them struggle with free weights. Many times, their body isn’t strong enough as of yet to make that jump. Their technique is an issue as well. I know from experience that when the body isn’t strong enough to handle a movement, it begins to compensate. It has become easy for me to watch others exercise and tell who is hurting another part of their body by lifting with the improper technique or just flat out trying to lift too much weight. I don’t say much due the lack of a relationship. One day though, I look forward to holding a few classes to teach others the things I am now learning. Resistance Training Bands will definitely be a large part of that.

Today marks a major milestone in my journey to living healthy and being fit. I was able to turn up my running and get in three miles. What’s more than that is my recovery time afterward was great. Usually, I would have ran to the shower, then fell into bed. Instead, I went right into business mode and attended a symposium that lasted another 3 hours. I felt just fine! I wasn’t sleepy or tired. The only ill effect was my body had not cooled down completely, so my sweat meter was a mess. Thank goodness I learned years ago to keep a few extra hand towels in the car. I solved that problem quickly until my body had a chance to cool off. It’s funny because a friend of mine had observed that I didn’t seem to take as many naps as I did when I started out. It’s small things like this that serve as signs of greater things to come! Stay tuned!

For my birthday, I decided to take a huge step in this journey to a better me. I decided to to the thing that most people who struggle with weight loss rarely ever do. That would involved getting on the scale to measure exactly how much I weigh. I might pull it off on camera, but I am uncomfortable in doing this. However, I realize that on many levels, this isn’t about me. There are many out there who will view this video blog I have created about losing weight and see me as their voice. I have been given the ability to communicate exactly what I feel with words. If the fight for healthy weight loss is looking for a voice, then I will be that person. This is a tough road I have chosen. There are no easy answers or any quick ways out. Continue walking with me on this journey and I will continue to give you reason to believe.

Before my workout this morning, I drank one Citrus Blast XS Energy Drink. I promised you earlier that I would let you know how I felt after trying Nutrilite’s Vitamins, Supplements and Sports Nutrition Products. I did 6 sets of 125 turns on the jump rope today. What even more surprising than that was the feeling that I was getting stronger as I exercised more. I was completely energized. If you are looking for an Energy Drink that has 0 carbs and 0 sugars, XS by Nutrilite is definitely worth a try.

About XS Energy Drink:

Spaghetti is one of my favorite healthy home cooked meals to prepare. You can really improve upon the healthiness of this meal by adding vegetables to your sauce. I figure, if I can get full and I’ve consumed a good amount of vegetables in doing so, I’ve done a lot better job than grabbing a bucket of fried chicken, biscuits and grape jelly.

As in any meal, especially when you are working towards a healthier lifestyle, I recommend that you do not cook or shop for food when you are hungry. Instead, grab a Nutrilite Snack Bar or a Meal Replacement Shake to hold you over until its time to feast. You’ll be cutting calories and putting more great things into your body all at the same time!
